Everything You Need to Know About The Endocannabinoid System

Welcome to the Canax CBD blog. So far, we’ve discussed all kinds of areas surrounding CBD, from how it can help with anxiety to menopause, how it can be used alongside HRT, and how it can help you sleep. And while we’ve covered the topic across most of our previous posts, we haven’t specifically talked about the Endocannabinoid System in too much detail. So, in today’s blog, that’s exactly what we’ll do!

We’ll explain in simple terms what the Endocannabinoid System is, how it works and why it’s important, how CBD interacts with it, and where you can get your hands on CBD to help your Endocannabinoid System function.

Let’s kick things off with an explanation of what the Endocannabinoid System is.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

To put it simply, the Endocannabinoid System is a cell-signalling system in your body. Essentially, it regulates vital functions and interacts with your brain to carry them out, and it can effect everything from mood to memory and stress.

Every person on earth has an Endocannabinoid System, and it’s extremely important for your overall functioning as a human, but unsurprisingly, it’s extremely complex.

If you’re more of a visual/audio learner, here’s a handy YouTube video which might help explain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYNTEB1X5Kg. To stick with us and find out more, let’s explore how it works.

How does the Endocannabinoid System work?

The Endocannabinoid System is broken into three components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. The two key receptors are CB1 and CB2, and endocannabinoids bind to these receptors to signal that the system needs to do something.

For example, endocannabinoids might target CB1 receptors to tell the spinal nerve to relieve pain, or they might bind to the CB2 receptor to signal that you’re experiencing inflammation. There are countless ways the three core components of the system interact, but these are the most important for the purposes of this article.

For more of a deep-dive into the nitty gritty of the science and to find out how enzymes play their part, here’s a really handy Endocannabinoid System article.

Why is the Endocannabinoid System important?

The Endocannabinoid System is still a relatively recent scientific discovery having being found in the 1990s, so it’s quite under-researched compared to other areas of biology such as the brain.

However, it’s agreed upon in the scientific community that it’s extremely important, and the system has been linked to the regulation of the following processes:

  • Metabolism
  • Chronic pain
  • Inflammation
  • Mood
  • Motor control
  • Learning and memory
  • Muscle formation
  • Liver function
  • Stress
  • Skin and nerve function
  • Appetite and digestion
  • Inflammation

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Scientists are finding new areas of importance for the Endocannabinoid System every day, and the more we learn, the more we realise just how significant it is.

How does THC interact with the Endocannabinoid System?

THC can have negative effects on your Endocannabinoid System, from paranoia to stress. However, it can also reduce your pain perception and stimulate your appetite. It also gets you “high”.

How does CBD interact with the Endocannabinoid System?

CBD doesn’t get you “high” whatsoever.

In fact, CBD doesn’t cause any negative effects at all, and only interacts positively with your Endocannabinoid System.

Experts believe that CBD is incredibly important, and that it actually helps prevent endocannabinoids from being broken down which means they can have more of a positive effect on your body. It’s also hypothesised that CBD binds to receptors, but more research is needed to confirm this.

All in all, scientists have found that CBD can help with a range of ailments thanks to its interaction with the Endocannabinoid System, from pain to nausea, sleep, anxiety, chronic pain, and more.
